Who is the speaker for Fall Convocation?

A. The speaker for Fall Convocation will be announced at a later date.

How many seating tickets will I receive?

Tickets are not required for the Fall Convocation ceremony. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. at the John Paul Jones Arena. Guest seating will be available in sections 107, 108, and 109.

Where do I pick up my cap and gown?

Students: Caps and gowns can be picked up from the University Bookstore at the following dates and times:

  • Wednesday, November 1: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
  • Thursday, November 2: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
  • Friday, November 3: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

These caps and gowns do not need to be returned after the ceremony; they may be retained as keepsakes.

Faculty: Academic Regalia is not required. However, regalia may be rented through the University Bookstore by calling 924-3721. The deadline for ordering rental regalia is October 11, 2017.

Where may I park?

Parking will be available at John Paul Jones Arena (surface lot and parking garage) located on Massie Road. (See University Map.)

Where do Intermediate Honors recipients and faculty members assemble?

Students and faculty members assemble by school in designated points on the arena floor area behind the stage at John Paul Jones Arena. Assembly begins at 1:00 p.m.; all students and faculty should be at assembly points no later than 1:30 p.m. Faculty marshals will organize groups into columns. At 1:45 p.m., the faculty marshals will direct students and faculty from the assembly area for the start of the procession at 2:00 p.m. The grand marshal will proceed down the center aisle at John Paul Jones Arena followed by the Intermediate Honors recipients and faculty members. The grand marshal will then lead the President's Party to the platform.

Who should I contact concerning the requirements for Intermediate Honors?

Contact the dean's office of your school. Each school sends notification to its students who will receive Intermediate Honors.

When will I obtain my Intermediate Honors certificate?

Certificates will be distributed immediately following the ceremony in the entry foyer of John Paul Jones Arena. For those who are unable to attend, certificates will be available at the Office of the University Registrar in Carruthers Hall. Those certificates that have not been picked up by November 27 will be mailed to the student's permanent address listed in the SIS/Student Information System.

Parking
For faculty members and students (with limited mobility) participating in the procession, please contact the Office of Major Events at 434-982-3099 to arrange for parking. For guests, accessible parking will be available in the surface parking lot adjacent to John Paul Jones Arena (see Accessible Parking Diagram).

Restrooms
Wheelchair-accessible restrooms are located inside John Paul Jones Arena.

Seating
Individuals using wheelchairs and one companion may sit in the designated areas inside John Paul Jones Arena. Signs designating accessible routes will be posted, and ushers will be available to assist you.

Accommodations for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Assistive listening devices are available at the arena for this event. To obtain one of these devices, visit the Guest Services desk in the main lobby. ASL interpreters will also be provided for this event. Guests requesting these services should inform an usher upon arrival at John Paul Jones Arena and you will be directed to appropriate seating. What is the Third-Year Ring Ceremony? Who is eligible to participate?

The Third-Year Ring Ceremony is organized by the Third-Year Council. It is a time for third-year students and their families to celebrate the halfway mark in their University education. The ceremony culminates with the traditional placement of the class ring. All members of the class are welcome, regardless of whether or not they have ordered a ring.
