Finals Weekend

Important Notice

To provide a safe environment for degree candidates, faculty, family and guests, the University has implemented a clear bag policy and is utilizing metal detectors for Valedictory Exercises on Friday, May 18 and Final Exercises on Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20. These security enhancements mirror those used for athletic events at Scott Stadium and John Paul Jones Arena. More Info.

Final Exercises: Assembly and Procession Instructions

Assembly

Assembly points will be designated near the Lawn for each school's degree candidates. All students should arrive at their designated assembly points no later than 8:45 a.m. on the morning of their ceremony to allow adequate time to go through security screeningAs a reminder:

  • Everyone, including graduating students, will be required to go through a metal detector.
  • A clear bag policy will be in effect.
  • Everyone wearing an outer garment (ex. an academic robe or coat) will be asked to open it for a visual inspection. 
  • Alcoholic beverages are not permitted.

 

Saturday, May 19 

  • College of Arts & Sciences: North Rotunda Plaza (near University Avenue)

  • Graduate School of Arts & Sciences: Rotunda, Southeast Terrace and West Terrace

  • Faculty: Rotunda, Southwest Terrace

 

Sunday, May 20 

  • School of Architecture: Rotunda, Northwest Terrace 

  • School of Continuing & Professional Studies: Poe Alley (West Range)

  • Curry School of Education: Rotunda, Southeast Terrace (Lawn side)

  • Darden Graduate School of Business Administration: Poe Alley (West Range)

  • Data Science Institute: Green Alley (East Range)

  • School of Engineering & Applied Science: North Rotunda Plaza (near University Avenue)

  • Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy: Rotunda, East Terrace

  • School of Law: Green Alley (East Range)

  • McIntire School of Commerce: North Rotunda Plaza (near University Avenue)

  • School of Medicine: Rotunda, West Terrace

  • School of Nursing: Rotunda, Northeast Terrace

  • Faculty: Rotunda, Southwest Terrace (Lawn side)

 

The Procession 

Saturday, May 19

The procession will start promptly at 10 a.m. The order of the procession is as follows:

  • Grand Marshal
  • Bicentennial Banner Carrier
  • Class of 2018 Banner Carrier
  • The Graduate School of Arts & Sciences led by the Dean and the Banner Carrier
  • The College of Arts & Sciences led by the Dean and the Banner Carrier
  • Faculty Members
  • Grand Marshal (2nd trip down the Lawn)
  • Newly Elected Members of the Raven Society
  • Platform Party (President Sullivan, Board of Visitors, and Vice Presidents)
  • Color Guard

At the end of the Final Exercises ceremony, the grand marshal, platform party, and faculty will recess up the Lawn. Following the recessional, the ceremony will officially conclude, and graduates and guests may leave their seating area.

As a reminder, alcohol is not permitted at the assembly points or on the Lawn during the Final Exercises.

Sunday, May 20

  • Grand Marshal

  • Schools - Each school is led by their respective Dean and the Banner Carrier
    • Wave 1: Darden, Medicine, Education, and Law
    • Wave 2: Continuing & Professional Studies, Architecture, Batten, and Data Science
    • Wave 3: Nursing, Commerce, and Engineering
  • Faculty Members
  • Grand Marshal (2nd trip down the Lawn)
  • Newly Elected Members of the Raven Society
