Services for Persons with Disabilities/Limited Mobility

Listed below are numerous services offered for persons with disabilities and/or limited mobility during Finals Weekend.

Deaf/Hard of Hearing

Seating for guests who wish to use the services of a sign language interpreter will be available at Valedictory Exercises and the two Final Exercises ceremonies. In addition, a live broadcast of both Final Exercises ceremonies will be open captioned and shown on the Lawn as well as at auditoriums nearby (see Remote (Indoor) Viewing Locations). If you or a member of your family are in need of either of these accommodations, please contact Barbara Zunder, Director of the Student Disability Access Center (434) 243-5180 or bz4e@virginia.edu) by May 1, 2017.

Parking & Shuttle Bus Service

Friday, May 19

Parking

A designated area located near the entrance of the John Paul Jones Arena (JPJA) will be available for individuals in wheelchairs or with limited mobility to park (map). A valid Disabled Parking Placard or license plate is required to park in this location.

Shuttle Service

Between 1 - 6 p.m., complimentary shuttle bus service to/from Central Grounds will be available for guests attending Valedictory Exercises. There will not be “designated” accessibility shuttles on Friday afternoon; however, all shuttle buses will be wheelchair accessible – some will accommodate two chairs and others four chairs.

At JPJA, shuttle buses will load near the entrance of the arena (marked with signage) and drop off/pick up guests on McCormick Road in front of the Harrison Institute/Small Special Collections Library (map).

Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21

Parking

A designated area located near the entrance of the John Paul Jones Arena (JPJA) will be available for individuals in wheelchairs or with limited mobility to park (map). A valid Disabled Parking Placard or license plate is required to park in this location.

Shuttle Service

Complimentary shuttle buses will run continuously from 7 a.m. until the school and department graduation ceremonies conclude (approximately 5:30 p.m.). The buses will run longer if the inclement- or severe-weather plan is followed.

Unlike Friday, not all shuttle buses will be wheelchair accessible; so, it is important that guests with mobility impairments (and up to two companions) board the Accessibility Shuttles from the John Paul Jones Arena.

At JPJA, buses will load near the entrance of the arena (marked with signage) and drop off/pick up guests on McCormick Road in front of the Harrison Institute/Small Special Collections Library. After Final Exercises, the Accessibility Shuttles will transport persons with mobility impairments (and up to two companions) to the various school/department graduation ceremony locations and return back to the John Paul Jones Arena (map).

Restrooms

Wheelchair-accessible restrooms near the Lawn are located in the following buildings: Bryan Hall, Garrett Hall, New Cabell Hall, Newcomb Hall, and Clemons Library.

Seating for Final Exercises

All guests attending Final Exercises on Saturday or Sunday will require a ticket whether the ceremony is on the Lawn or in John Paul Jones Arena. For the Lawn, individuals using wheelchairs (or guests with mobility challenges) and one companion may sit in the designated area in front of Cocke Hall. Limited seating is available in this section, which is not shaded. Guests requiring assistance may prefer to watch the ceremony in one of the climate-controlled auditoriums nearby (see Remote (Indoor) Viewing Locations) in consideration of the heavily congested areas on the Lawn.

Wheelchair Rental

Navigating around the Grounds during Finals Weekend involves a considerable amount of walking and traveling through heavily congested areas. Guests requiring assistance may wish to rent a wheelchair for Finals Weekend. Wheelchairs are not available through the University; however, they may be rented in advance from the following local companies:

  • Lincare: (434) 974-6688
  • National Seating and Mobility Charlottesville: (434) 971-8808
  • Roberts Home Medical, Inc.: (434) 973-7847

Due to the heavy demand for rental wheelchairs, orders should be placed by no later than May 8, 2017. Click here to view the University's Accessibility Map.
