Finals Weekend Weather Plans
Valedictory Exercises (Friday, May 17): If the decision is made to move the ceremony indoors, announcements will be made no later than 12 p.m. In the case of inclement or severe weather, Valedictory Exercises will be moved from the Lawn to the John Paul Jones Arena. Doors to the arena will open at 1:30 p.m.
Final Exercises and School/Department Ceremonies (Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19): On both Saturday and Sunday morning, announcements regarding the weather plan will be made by no later than 7:30 a.m. For Saturday and Sunday, there are three possible weather plans that may be followed:
Fair Weather: Weather conditions are ideal. Little to no rain. Final Exercises ceremony will be held on the Lawn and specified school/department ceremonies will be held outside.
Inclement Weather: In the event of rain without the presence of thunder, lightning, high winds, or other unsafe conditions, Final Exercises will be held on the Lawn and all school and department graduation ceremonies will be held indoors. The designated locations for the school/department ceremonies will be available on the School/Department Graduation Ceremony Locations page.
Severe Weather: If thunder, lightning, high winds, or other dangerous conditions are present, Final Exercises will be moved to the John Paul Jones Arena and all school and department graduation ceremonies will be held indoors. The designated locations for the school/department ceremonies will be available on the School/Department Graduation Ceremony Locations page. Under this plan, there will be a limited procession (faculty and President's Party only). Doors will open at 8 a.m. Graduating students should arrive at the arena by 8:45 a.m. and proceed directly to the seating area on the main floor of the arena. Faculty should be assembled in the Courtside Club, which is located on the bottom level of the arena, by no later than 9:30 a.m. Graduating students will be limited to 3 (three) guests. Only guests with tickets will be allowed entry into the arena. Graduating students and faculty do not need a ticket as long as they are wearing their cap and gown. If the ceremony is moved inside, please allow extra time for arrival since traffic will be congested around John Paul Jones Arena.
